  1. The Truth about controlled feed dangerous game rifles.

The myth about controlled feed rifles for dangerous game needs to be challenged.

During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, I shot 513 buufalo in the Northern Territory using a modified 1903 Springfield in 30/06. it did its job as it was cheap, and relatively reliable. Most of the buffalo were shot on foot with no backup. Headshots were the norm, although plenty where shot through the lungs when the action became hot and fast. In reality, I was a youngster, and when things didnt go according to plan, there was planty of scope to get up a tree, which I did on quite a few occasions. Now, some 30 years later, I have time to reflect!
I now have a 375 H&H, using the premium ammo that I didnt have, didnt know about, or couldnt afford back then!

There were times when my trusty 30/06 just didnt cut it. Times when the controlled feed meant that the cartridge “jumped” out of the magazine and went into the chamber ahead of the mauser style extractor. And try as I might, I could not fully chmaber the round! That meant running up a tree with an angree buffalo bull in pursuit, which for a 22 year old as fit as a mallee bull, didnt seem the problem it is now! Sure, it occurred only occasionally, maybe rarely, but that made me think that this controlled round feeding for dangerous game may not be all that its cracked up to be.

i modified the rifle (with the help of a gunsmith) to be able to close the action on a round that was ahead of the claw extractor. I went through 2 barrels with that old 30/06 and sold it when I moved south. But since then, I have owned many rifles of the Remington type. Funny thing is, after 4 rifles and 3 barrels, I dont ever recall having a problem with extraction! My 375 has never ever let me down, after near 500 rounds. And I can drop an extra round onto the feed ramp at any time and simply close the bolt!
My personal view, is that reliability of feeding of the cartridges is far more improtant on a dangerous game rifle that going for a “controlled feed” rifle. Lets face it, if you havent checked whether they chamber Ok before the shoot, you are in trouble not matter what you use!
Being now the “other side’ of 50, I would be far happier with my “push feed” rifle today than my “controlled feed” rifle of yesterday.
And that I cannot run up trees like I did, I would take my Remington push feed any day over my controlled feed rifle of yesterday. My life, and my family now depend on it, and my 30+ years of experence simply adds weight to my views.
Perhaps the myth is more accentuated by being retold tin Africa hat what is really the truth.

    Mike
